RAPHAEL VELLA

Raphael Vella is an artist, art critic and lecturer at the Junior College and University of Malta. As a practising artist, he has shown his work in several personal exhibitions in Malta and abroad. He studied art education and aesthetics up to Masters level at the University of Malta and is currently reading for a PhD in Fine Art at Camberwell College of Arts in London. Since 1992, he has regularly written articles and essays about Maltese art in local newspapers, magazines and exhibition catalogues. After winning the Commonwealth Art and Craft Award in 1998/99, he travelled to New Zealand to occupy the post of artist-in-residence at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch in the South Island. In 2001, he spent six weeks as a Fulbright scholar at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in the USA. In 2002, Vella curated two exhibitions: VIA at the University of Malta and Cityspaces , the regeneration of an old building in Valletta.
